Creating a student blog is a great way to stand out from your competition. The theme and format of your blog should be closely intertwined with your global social media strategy and how you wish to position this new blog. Now that you have a theme for a student blog, how do you make it a reality?

Here are the first 3 steps to take to create an effective student blog:

1. Choose the right writer

The answer to "Who should write for our school's student blog?" should be found when defining the type of student you want to reach. A student interested in your most popular program? A student going back to school after years spent working? You will need to identify your school's personas to answer these questions precisely.

Once you have defined the target you wish to reach, ask professors about students who fit the description and who would be interested in a mutually beneficial relationship with the school. These students should be personable, have strong written skills, enjoy telling stories but most importantly, they should be willing to tell things the way they are.

2. Create Editorial Guidelines

Once you have chosen your writer, have him/her sit down with the head of the Communication Department to present your school's general social media strategy and the part played by the student blog in it. Together, they should go over privacy and legal limits (signing an agreement about what is acceptable and unacceptable on the blog is recommended), post formats, responses and monitoring of comments. They should also draft a list of subjects to cover in the blog.

Such subjects may include:

  • What the student loves about your school, what disappoints him/her, what has been a great surprise
  • General life as a student
  • Problems with juggling personal life, sometimes a professional life and school
  • Views on the industry
  • More trivial reports about life on campus or even the weather (as it gives also an idea of life on campus)
  • Community events and community news
  • Open houses and seminars
  • Announcements, graduations, student awards, etc.

Keep in mind that these editorial guidelines are just that. The student should be responsible for all the content and there should be no pre-screening of his/her posts. He or she should also be responsible for any and all comments on your blog.

After the launch, these meetings should occur on a regular basis to give the student an opportunity to voice concerns or difficulties.

3. Commit

The last key to making this student blog a success is to commit to delivering good quality posts on a regular basis, at least once a week. This is a team effort. Your school will have to make sure your Ambassador has everything he/she needs to do his/her work well. This will include helping him/her build an audience by publicizing the blog: add a button on the homepage of your website, link the blog to your profiles on all the social media platforms.

What have you tried to make your student blog a success?

What is the attraction most popular blogs have that compels visitors to return time and again? What we're discussing here is not necessarily what it takes to generate traffic but rather how to get visitors to return! Of course the main component of any successful blog would have to be the content quality of the posts but there's more to developing reader loyalty than just that!

Let's quickly review the 3 main components typically found on any successful blog which of course is one that has a sizable and loyal following!

Quality

The most obvious and necessary component of any successful blog would have to be the content quality offered readers! Updates need to be informative, inspiring, thought provoking or otherwise useful and/or entertaining just to get the visitors attention. This is the starting point and as mentioned above, although critical, not always enough to develop reader loyalty! What else could you possibly offer visitors both new and returning you may ask? Remember we're talking about loyalty and this can only be developed over time, so read further to see what else needs to be added to get people to return repeatedly!

Consistency

When you first generate traffic to your site people are attracted to the topic around which you based most of your updates! Remember, blogs are really highly focused social sites that cater to those interested in a particular topic. When posting it is always important that the subject you write about maintains some type of relevance to the topic you've centered your platform around! When you start to veer away from this topic the people previously attracted begin to lose interest and you as a result begin to lose readers! You MUST maintain some type of consistency relative to the theme of your platform or you will never be able to develop the loyalty you both need and want!

Continuity

Now that you've addressed the content quality and topic consistency you offered visitors what else is needed to compel people to continually return? This is actually quite simple when you consider as already mentioned, that loyalty takes time! If you want and expect visitors to return and eventually become loyal readers, you must continue to create and post fresh and unique updates to your platform! Quite simply if people are to return you must give them something to return for and this will require a continual effort on your part to keep your site updated!

Most popular blogs have developed a loyal following based upon 3 common components they all share! As our discussion above has explained, it is not enough to generate traffic and expect these visitors to become instantly loyal to your platform! Loyalty is earned and this takes time but by paying attention to the content quality, topic consistency and putting forth a continual effort there's no reason you can't develop a successful blog! The challenge you face is maintaining the patience to stick with it till you've built up a sizable following!

Have you ever dropped a comment on a blog just to get a link to your site?

For websites, links generally act as a vote of trust. The more links to a site, the more the search engines such as Google see the site as being trusted. The more trusted a site appeared, the higher it ranked in the search engine results.

Through the natural evolution of the web it has become more difficult to obtain links from other sites. People had to search harder, devise linking schemes and pay for links from other sites just to improve their search ranking.

This gradually changed as social networking and social media created a culture of bloggers. These sites allowed people to comment on articles and web content and in many cases, leave a link back to their own website. From this grew the whole concept of link building through blog commenting.

Naturally, bloggers saw an increase in traffic as more and more webmasters began searching for links. It became commonplace to see blog articles with hundreds of comments from "Best Cancer Lawyer" and "New York Real Estate Broker" popping up all over the web and across the blogosphere.

While these types of links were effective at one point, search engines were forced to take measures to deal with such links. Google introduced the concept of "nofollow" and stopped using these links to determine search ranking. Gradually algorithmic updates throughout the major search engines devalued links in blog comments.

Is there any real value to comment on a blog and leave a link back to your website?

While links obtained in blog comments are not all that valuable, these do have amazing potential.

The internet has evolved into a social landscape. People no longer visit websites because they are told or because they spot an advertisement. Interactions and relationships are the true value of commenting on a blog is to develop a relationship with the blogger and other people who visit the site.

Comments that are on topic and contain relevant material adding value to the topic of conversation raises your profile. Others, including the blog owner are likely to see the value added and provide you an opportunity to guest post or recommend your site as a resource.

Relationships build in such a way may not pay immediate dividends. The more your comments are seen as relevant, the more trust you earn. From trust comes the ultimate benefit of increased traffic and readership on your own site.

Remember, the value of a blog comment isn't the link you obtain. The value comes from an ongoing interaction and relationship that develops over time.

The article intends to explain how a Linksys wireless router can be configured to setup a password. The methods compiled here are simple and correct until date. It is, however, strongly recommended that these should be followed correctly to avoid facing problems. This will help save time and money that would otherwise be wasted looking for Linksys router support.

The below mentioned instructions will help you setup the password on your own and without the help of Linksys router support.

Instructions:

Resetting Existing\Default Password:

Open your internet browser namely Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Chrome etc. Type ‘192.168.1.1' (without quotations and as is) in the browser's address bar and then either click on the OK button on press the Enter key on the keyboard.

When the login screen comes, enter your existing username and password. If these are the default ones, enter them to login. The default password for a Linksys wireless router is ‘admin' and the username is none (the field is left blank). However, it is strongly recommended that you check your original documents that came with the router for the default login details. If you ever made changes to your login credentials, then enter the modified ones.

When logged in, click to highlight the Administration tab and you will see password fields filled with your existing password. Clear the Router Password field and type in a new password. Retype it in the Re-enter to confirm field. Review and change other settings like Web Access etc. only if you desire to. Otherwise, click on the Save Settings button below to save the changes and exit the interface. Your router is fully secured now. Also, note down your existing username and password on a piece of paper and keep it to a safe place away from damage or unauthorized reach. This will help you log on and reconfigure the settings if your mind refuses to recall the password some time.

Resetting When the Existing Password has been Lost:

If you want to change the password etc. when you have lost hold of the existing username & password, then use this method. Hard reset the router by taking a thin, sharp pin. Push it inside the Reset hole (located at the back of the router) and hold it for 10-20 seconds or until you see the blinking power LED light. When the light flickers, release the button. Wait for the router to boot fully with all the relevant lights on. This will reset the router to factory default settings. Now you can use the default login password and username to login to the router and set a new password for your router's security. Follow the same above mentioned procedure to login and change the password.

Additional Tips:

Since most of the Linksys routers have more or less the same username and password, this can lead to unauthorized access and ultimately insecure configurations. Change the password if you feel like your security is being compromised.

How to Build a PC

Posted on 5:17 PM, under

By: pazzer

Do you know what could beat the exciting feeling of having a new computer? Make your own PC!

Making your own computer from scratch is not only fun to do but cheaper as well. You can get to choose the parts you want to use on your PC. This gives you the control in balancing the price and the quality of your newly assembled PC.

Before we show you the steps, here are the necessary parts of the computer that you need to buy:

  • Processor Cooler
  • Motherboard memory
  • Graphics Card
  • Hard Drive
  • CD or DVD Writer
  • Floppy Drive
  • Sound Card
  • Computer Case
  • Power Supply
  • Monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
Steps in making your own PC:

Step 1

The computer case includes motherboard spacers and screws. This helps set the motherboard in the case. Mount the spacers into the corners and to the proper side holes. It should match up with the holes in your motherboard.

If the motherboard has different jack arrangements from the case's I/O (input/output) shield, use the shield that comes with the motherboard. Mount it from the inside of the case.

Now, to install the processor, raise the lever on the side of the CPU (processor) socket. The CPU's pins are made in a way that it is possible to put the CPU into the socket only one way. Therefore, if you are doing it right, it should easily fit.

Hold the processor down and close to the lever. Before installing the CPU cooler, put thermal compound onto the top of the CPU (on core).

Step 2

Mount the processor cooler on top of the processor. Press down lightly. Clip the heat sink to the processor socket. Attach the CPU cooler's fan power to the motherboard's fan header. It is usually labeled "CPU FAN 1".

Plug in the memory module to the long sockets called DIMM's. Unlock both tabs and push the memory straight down. The clips on the slot's sides should close. Carefully push the motherboard against the I/O shield. Put in and tighten the motherboard screws. Do not force it.

The brown slot nearest to the processor is the AGP slot meant for the video card. Insert the video card evenly in the slot provided. Screw the card into place. Make sure that your AGP video card is placed properly.

At the corner of the motherboard, you can see two rows of pins. Connect case leads to the pins. These leads are usually labeled. Read your motherboard manual. See which label goes to which set of pins.

Step 3

Now we mount the floppy drive, CD/DVD drive and the hard drive. The motherboard usually has 2 IDE channels, each supporting 2 devices. If you install 2 IDE devices on the same cable, you will have the main to be the "master" and the other to be the "slave".

This is the same procedure for CD/DVD drives. Look for an HDD and CD drive manual for the correct jumper settings. You should do these before you screw drives into place.

Connect hard drives to a channel different from the CD drives. Floppy controller has a socket shorter than the IDE controllers.

Make sure the side of the IDE cable that has a red colored stripe lines up with pin1.

Lastly, plug in the main ATX power cable and connect all drives with the power supply. If you have more case coolers, you may also connect them.

Now, connect your monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers to the back of the case. Put in the power cable to the power supply unit. Double-check proper installation before the first boot.

You can now show your friends your first assembled computer.
