When new to the online world and creating or running websites it can be a bit confusing when talking about blogs and websites. After a recent conversation with a client, who was stressed out over the decision of making a website or a blog, I thought it'd be good to nail down some of the basic bits about these two styles.
What is the difference between a website and a blog?
A website is a collection of web pages that display stuff like text, images, and videos and so on. A blog is a is a collection of web pages that display stuff like text, images, videos and so on. So, really, a blog and a website is pretty much the same thing however they display your content to your readers differently. The biggest difference is this: a website will typically remain the same for extended periods of time and a blog tends to have lots of new content added to it on a consistent basis (daily, weekly, etc.). To make it a bit more confusing the term website is often used instead of blog.
What a website is for
A basic website will typically be a static set of informational pages. Think of a business website. There will be a Contact page with phone numbers, a product page showing you what they sell, an About Us page telling you about their company and so on. This sort of information really does not change all that much. It's just basic static info. That being said these basic websites are fantastic at providing a space on the web for businesses to showcase their goods and services and for people to showcase their talents.
What a blog is for
A basic blog is far more active and tends to have a feel of "streaming information." Often updated daily, or several times a week, blogs are very much like online journals that provide up to date information on a topic or range of topics. They provide the reader with a timeline of information as well as a chance to interact with the blog authors though comment sections. Search engines are hungry for the constant flow of fresh new content they provide and blogs often do well in search results and ranking.
So, what should I make?
Make a website with a blog component. The standard website part, with static style pages, is a critical part of any web presence. Add a blog to the static website to provide a steady stream of information in an easy to navigate style not only for the search engines but for your readers. A blog helps build a community of fans and readers around your website. To easily and quickly make a website and blog check out Content Management Systems like WordPress.
